Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
