Just as Storm Claudia tore through the northern region the night before, Manchester City blew the visitors away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three-nil win for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their position at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for Manchester United

This result signalled successive Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since May 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' capacity to juggle domestic and European football with a small team has been a widely debated subject since they secured entry to the UCL. Reviewing the schedule, it always seemed this was the week that would seriously challenge this capability. Regrettably for the visitors, they appeared fatigued from start to finish, the memorable win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

The Red Devils had several sorties ahead, their direct style giving them alternatives in the flanks but they could not test the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, in the meantime, commanded possession, taunting their opposition and trying to lure them of their structure.

Goals Galore

Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a quick turnover in the ball saw Hemp allowed the opportunity to strike a attempt home from range.

After the Break

The primary substitution came from the United manager at the break as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came most likely to score, rattling the upright, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to record a solitary shot on goal.

The hosts, in contrast, could have increased their cushion when a superb Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the winning team.
