India's capital Rises to Hazardous Pollution Following Diwali

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "severe" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Several parts of the capital registered an AQI over 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the healthy level recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding acceptable limits.

Pyrotechnics Ban and New Changes

Since 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that covers the capital as the cold season sets in.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the current local government petitioned the supreme court to request a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Court Verdict and Implementation

To the disappointment of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited hours throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several recording stations throughout Delhi showed pollution peaking around the night hours to some of the worst levels seen during Diwali in at least three years.

Regional Effects

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also sparked a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing deteriorating air quality in Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the celebrations.

Chronic Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in Delhi have remained as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the situation continuing to worsen.

Around the festival period, the amount of toxic particles in the environment has been observed to spike to 70% higher the peak records ever documented in Beijing, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated city.

Various Pollution Factors

The problem in Delhi is attributed to a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, construction debris, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in adjacent regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the capital region is substantial, according to multiple research.

The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for ten thousand early fatalities per year in the capital.
